Agriculture forms the backbone of Bihar’s economy, with sugarcane serving as one of the state’s major cash crops.
The Sugarcane Industries Department is committed to promoting sustainable growth in the sector through strategic planning,
innovation, and modern agricultural practices. During the Fourth Agriculture Roadmap, the department aims to strengthen the
rural economy by establishing sugarcane-based industries and enhancing sugarcane cultivation, production, productivity,
and sugar recovery. Currently, Bihar has 9 operational sugar mills (Tirupati Sugars Limited,. Bagha; Sasa Musa Sugar Mill,
Gopalganj; Magadh Sugar Mill, Narkatiaganj; Vishnu Sugar Mill, Gopalganj; HPCL Biofuels Sugar Mill,
Lauriya; Majhaulia Sugar Mill — Majhaulia; Magadh Sugar & Energy Ltd. — Gopalganj; Riga Sugar Mill — Sitamarhi;
Hari Nagar Sugar Mill, West Champaran; Pratappur Sugar Mill) with a combined crushing
capacity of
62,950 TCD. To support farmers, the department is implementing the “Mukyamantri Ganna Vikas Yojna,”
which focuses on the supply of high-yielding certified seeds, subsidized plant protection chemicals,
promotion of intercropping, modern seedling techniques, and farmer training programs. In addition,
through the “Bihar State Jaggery Industry Promotion Programme,” efforts are being made to improve farmers’
income and create a favourable environment for the development of sugarcane-based industries in the state.
